Doing this probably comes in several pieces, which could be implemented sequentially or together. Here's my shot at a breakdown of some of the pieces I can see that could exist separately or together: - New "From URL" option that begins with pasting in a URL - Whenever there's a URL in the caption, treat as "From URL" above - When there is a URL, preview in Pally what the link will look like as posted - When a URL is added, grab social image from the linked page - When a URL is added, grab additional suggested images from the linked page - Allow Image/Media upload during composing - When a URL is added, default to submitting as a Link Attachment for platforms that support it, and URL in caption plus image for platforms that don't support Link Attachment - Allow the option to disable a Link Attachment so even platforms that support them switch to URL in caption plus Image, and to switch back - Implement ability to override Image, Title, and Page Description in Link Attachments where supported
From my perspective, the order of priority among text and images is: - Grab social preview image (highest) - Grab additional images to select (high) - Grab page title or text (low) It would be great if pasting a URL into any composer triggered this, but a "Create Post by URL" option alone could work. Personally I'd rather see the default composer be the "Text Post" window but with "Text Only Post" turned off... which I admit sounds wacky given the names.
Ian: Great comments! I think we will make it so that when you enter a URL in, it automatically shows you the preview image of that URL that the social platform would display. As for the text only by default, we could perhaps add a setting "Default Composer" which you could toggle to text or media however I'm not understanding the last part, if it's a text only post we would need that toggle switched on? Haha, maybe I'm understanding wrong...
Tim: I think automatically showing the preview image when you enter a URL is great, but I think some of the social network APIs have a distinction between a URL submitted within the caption text, and a URL submitted as a link. (See how posting to Twitter and Facebook with the same post looks in Buffer.) For my latter comment, I was referring to how the composer is laid out when "text only post" is toggled off— With the preview elements, etc. That's the most like what other platforms show.
FYI, I tried a Text post from Pallyy with a caption including a URL. On Twitter I just saw the caption (without the URL in it) over a link preview. On Facebook I saw the caption including the URL over a link preview. (The raw URL looks out of place on Facebook.)
